National group response to DLUHC consultation on joint tenancies and domestic abuse
During the debates on the domestic abuse bill in 2021, the government pledged to look separately at the issue of joint tenancies and domestic abuse: whether domestic abuse perpatrators use joint tenancies to further abuse, legal mechanisms for ending joint tenancies and whether they work, and the impact on survivors. As a key area of work for the national group, we were pleased to contribute to a joint group response. The response calls for an introduction of a new legal mechanism.
