2021 – 2022
The first post-pandemic Annual Review from the NFA since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic celebrates the 20th anniversary of the ALMO model of local authority housing management; members’ homelessness and zero-carbon work, efforts to capture and act on the tenant voice, ALMOs in the vanguard of response to the new regulatory regime – and much more.
2020 Vision
Numerous delays to Brexit, parliamentary drama of the highest order, a new prime minister, yet another housing minister and a general election… and then COVID-19. During one of the most extraordinary years in living memory, both politically and on the social and public health front, the NFA and its members kept calm and carried on.
This year we celebrate the centenary of the Addison Act. The 1919 post-war legislation underpinned the first wave of ‘homes fit for heroes’ and recognised the role of local authorities in building these homes. Our Annual Review tells how the sector continues to rise to the challenge, providing new homes, and excellent housing management and related services to tenants.
Our Annual Review reflects on what has been an extremely challenging and sad year for the social housing sector, with the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower. We look at what the ALMO sector has been doing this year in the context of Grenfell Tower, and what is likely to happen over the coming year.
In 2016 the housing policy environment contained a number of elements which we felt would impact negatively on social housing. The political environment at the time also made us believe it would be implemented forcefully over the term of the Parliament until everything changed. They say a week is a long time in politics so the whole year has been like an eruption. The EU referendum not only produced an unexpected result for many, but brought forward “another Government” with different ideas about social housing policy.

This year housing has definitely had its fair share of attention with the Housing and Planning Bill going through Parliament but what has it meant for ALMOs and their tenants?
