'Have a Go' skills sessions shortlisted for national award

Ground-breaking employability sessions for jobseekers in South Yorkshire, devised and delivered by NFA member Berneslai Homes, have been shortlisted for the prestigious national Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) Awards 2022.

The ‘Have A Go’ sessions, created by Berneslai Homes’ Achieve Team, offered 30 hours of training and learning to Barnsley’s economically hardest-hit communities.

Participants were unemployed and looking to gain skills and experience that might lead towards work they hadn’t previously considered. The sessions covered a wide range of sectors from home improvement to the beauty industry.

Barnsley Council funded the scheme through its Community Renewal Fund, making it free for eligible unemployed residents. Between April and September 2022, 72 people registered and almost all the 66 who completed all sessions have gone on to further training, started businesses or found jobs.

Amanda Garrard, Chief Executive of Berneslai Homes, said: “Improving opportunities for employment and training is one of our strategic ambitions, and our Achieve Team works incredibly hard to support our tenants with this. It’s fantastic to see their efforts recognised nationally and reflects the wonderful achievements of all the participants who have grown in confidence, learned new skills, and have a bright future ahead of them.”

The shortlist, judged by an independent panel of experts, has been chosen from 182 entries. This year’s award finalists have been chosen for their hard work, innovation, and unstinting determination to help people into worthwhile employment.

Winners will be announced on the evening of 30 November, the first day of the ERSA Conference at the Library of Birmingham.
