Helen, a passionate champion of the ALMO model and a prominent supporter of the NFA and its members, has led Stockport Council’s ALMO for the last two decades. Since her appointment to the newly formed Stockport Homes in 2005, she has transformed a struggling council-run service into one of the highest-performing housing providers in the UK.

Under her leadership, SHG became the first ALMO to build new homes and sign agreements with the Housing Corporation (once the housing sector’s regulator). The ALMO earned two top three-star Audit Commission ratings, unlocking £100 million in investment and changing thousands of lives. Last year, SHG achieved the best tenant satisfaction measure results for any council landlord in the country. 

Helen’s influence extends far beyond Stockport. Nationally recognised across the sector for her vision and expertise, she has shaped wider housing policy through her roles as vice-chair of Greater Manchester Housing Providers, board member of the National Federation of ALMOs, and academic examiner at Salford University.

As a founder and active member of Greater Manchester Housing Providers, Helen played a key role in influencing the combined authority and advocating for social housing’s role. Helen’s people-first approach earned her recognition as HR Magazine’s ‘most people-focused CEO’, while SHG has ranked among the UK’s top employers for 16 consecutive years – winning best place to work three times. 

Known for her unwavering commitment to customers and colleagues, Helen has never taken a sick day in 20 years. She spearheaded the award-winning #BeYou inclusivity programme and led SHG to its Investors in People Platinum award and 16 consecutive years of Best Companies recognition.

The award judges praised Helen’s consistent and vocal support of the work and purpose of the social housing sector. I’m delighted to see her win this very richly deserved recognition.”
