Your home, your safety sets out the BSR’s powers under the 2022 legislation, now fully in force, which governs all buildings over 18m tall or with more than seven floors. It obliges all landlords in the private and social housing sector to prove they are correctly managing any risk of structural failure or fire spread.

The campaign directs tenants to a new register where they can check that their building is registered, as the law now says all high-rise residential buildings must be before people live in them. The register records location and when and how they were built, and helps identify likely safety risks which need to be managed.

All high-rise building managers must:

• provide residents with safety information about their building
• make sure that it’s clear how they raise concerns or make complaints
• encourage residents’ active involvement and feedback, and listen to what they say

The BSR has also launched a regular newsletter that will keep tenants in touch with the regulator’s work and explain their rights in further detail.

It will remind them that they can help improve their personal safety and that of their homes and buildings by making sure, for instance, that they know what to do in an emergency, that they give the building manager reasonable access to their home to check and resolve any safety issues, and report missing signs or faulty fire doors as quickly as possible to their landlord.
