21 July 2023: The Social Housing (Regulation) Bill passed into law at midnight after receiving royal assent yesterday. Its development has been strongly supported by the NFA and its members, and today we welcome a new era of oversight for the whole sector, just over a decade after the Audit Commission – which monitored the performance of local authority housing managers – was stood down by the coalition government.
As the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023 receives royal assent, NFA Managing Director Eamon McGoldrick explains his enthusiasm for this new era of regulation in the social housing sector.
This summer (June 2023) a small group of social landlords share the relief of students everywhere as they emerge from the housing sector’s metaphorical examination hall. For the first time in more than a decade, social landlord performance is being formally monitored and assessed, and a first pilot scheme of consumer regulation inspections has recently finished. The new inspection regime will begin in earnest in April 2024.
