NFA Response to the Government’s consultation on Awaab’s Law
The NFA is pleased to respond to the Government’s consultation on Awaab’s Law. Coming from the terrible and unnecessary death of the young child, Awaab Ishak, the consultation rightly focuses on the need for landlords to ensure tenants live in a home that is decent, safe and secure; and that landlords investigate and remediate health hazards in a timely way. This is a core requirement of a good social landlord, but it has not always happened, and this law should raise standards across the social housing sector.
Our members fully support the principles of Awaab’s Law, but they have raised concerns around some of the detail included in the consultation, and the operability and unintended consequences of some of the proposals. We also have concerns about the conclusions in the cost impact assessment, and have asked DLUHC to review this in partnership with the sector to make a more realistic assessment.
