COUNCIL housing is home to over three million people in England and yields more than £7bn a year in rental income for the local authorities that manage them. Most could go on being decent homes for generations of young and old well beyond 2050, but only if government policy recognises that social housing is a valid and affordable option for those who want it. Local authorities also need full support from central government as they strive to decarbonise council stock to meet zero-carbon targets.

This research, commissioned by the NFA in partnership with the Local Government Association and ARCH, offers a fully costed explanation of how councils and ALMOs can work with government to help deliver its target of 300,000 new homes a year, and even add income to public finances as they do it.
